OVERVIEW
In Spring 2002, the NLN sent its Faculty Census Survey to the deans/directors of 1,419 schools that offer RN and/or graduate programs. 1,098 schools (77.4%) responded to the survey and provided information about the faculty in their schools. The findings from this survey are detailed in the publication, Nurse Educators 2002: Report of the Faculty Census Survey of RN and Graduate Programs.
Through ten graphs and 31 tables -- many of which show comparisons to data from previous surveys -- this Report provides
data on a wide range of information about the faculty who were teaching in
our nation's associate degree, diploma, and baccalaureate/ higher degree programs
in 2002.
While data from the 2002 Faculty Census Survey provide only a "snapshot" of
the current number and characteristics of nursing faculty, they
reveal several trends, three of which are potentially critical.
Those three trends are the increasing number of part-time faculty,
the aging of the nurse faculty population, and the large number
of nursing faculty who are not prepared at the doctoral level.
The Report discusses each of these phenomena
and presents 24 recommendations arising from our analysis of the
data. These recommendations are directed toward individual faculty,
schools of nursing, colleges and universities, professional associations,
and those who formulate public policy.
