Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
(Core Competency 2):

Managing Incivility and Other Student Challenges

This workshop will explore a variety of challenging student situations, from classroom interruptions to threats and intimidation directed toward faculty. The speaker will present a variety of proactive strategies designed to prevent problematic behaviors, and various reactive strategies to assist faculty in responding to incivility and other inappropriate student conduct. Case studies will engage the audience and help them apply these strategies to specific student-teacher scenarios.

Objectives:

  • Discuss various student challenges facing faculty in today’s higher education environment
  • Describe the relationship between the Nurses’ Code of Ethics and faculty responsibility to deal with student behavioral problems
  • Describe at least 4 proactive strategies for minimizing the occurrence of student incivility
  • Identify at least 3 reactive strategies for dealing with problematic student behavior.
  • Create personal action plan for managing challenging student situations more effectively.
