Excellence Initiatives

National League for Nursing - Excellence Initiatives

One of the goals of the National League for Nursing is to lead in setting standards that advance excellence and innovation in nursing education. Toward this end, the Board of Governors, NLN members, and staff have collaborated to develop a number of initiatives that relate to excellence and innovation. Among the material you will find on the NLN's website related to excellence and innovation in nursing education are the following:

Academy of Nursing Education
a program established by the NLN Board of Governors to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of outstanding individuals in and outside the profession who have contributed to nursing education in sustained and significant ways.

Excellence in Nursing Education Model
a visual representation of the many elements needed to achieve excellence in all types of nursing education programs (practical nurse, associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral)

Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education  
a listing of characteristics or traits that serve to define a level of outstanding performance in nursing education. The 30 hallmarks are enhanced by lists of questions faculty might ask themselves to assess the extent to which the hallmark has been achieved in their program(s).

Centers of Excellence Program  
a program designed to recognize schools of nursing that have achieved a level of excellence in one of three areas: Creating Environments that Enhance Student Learning and Professional Development, Creating Environments that Promote the Pedagogical Expertise of Faculty, and Creating Environments that Advance the Science of Nursing Education

Student “Excellence Paper” Competition  
an initiative designed to challenge students enrolled in Center of Excellence schools to reflect on the meaning of excellence and what it means to be a student in a school that has been recognized for excellence

Position Statement on Innovation in Nursing Education
the NLN's official position on the importance of and need for innovation in nursing education if we are to transform the enterprise

Task Group on Excellence in Nursing Education  
a working group of NLN members charged with promoting excellence in all types of nursing education programs (practical nurse, associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral).

Task Group on Innovation in Nursing Education  
a working group of NLN members charged with promoting innovation and encouraging reform in all types of nursing programs

Resources Related to Excellence and Innovation  
a list of material from the NLN's journal ( Nursing Education Perspectives ) and other sources related to excellence and innovation in nursing education
