The Nominations Process
The National League for Nursing (NLN) Nominations Committee reviews all recommendations received from individual members, agency members, and the constituent leagues and prepares a slate of candidates for election each year. Nominations are sought for individuals ready and able to take on these responsibilities and leadership in September. Candidates selected for the ballot are expected to hold agency membership or individual membership in the NLN.

The Nominations Committee is especially interested in reviewing recommendations that will ensure that the NLN, its subsidiary boards, and advisory councils have a breadth of experience in national and international policy discussions on nursing, health and higher education; a deep understanding of our society's multiculturalism; and a demonstrated expertise in public/private approaches to creative systems of health care delivery and higher education.

NLN Board of Governors
The NLN Board of Governors is a special group of diverse individuals who share the goal of promoting excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce. Members of the board assume significant responsibility for all aspects of the organization - shaping our vision, developing our policies, advancing our mission and goals, ensuring our growth.

NLN Advisory Councils
The NLN advisory councils provide guidance and support to the Board of Governors. Advisory councils are formed to achieve the goals and objectives of the NLN Strategic Plan. The work of the advisory councils is coordinated by an elected five-member executive committee. The advisory councils accomplish their work through the appointment of task groups. An NLN member may become involved in any advisory council and contribute to its work by participating on a task group or by being elected as a member of its executive committee. Advisory council members are elected for three-year positions and the chair-elect is elected for two years with the commitment to serve an additional two years as chair.

Time Commitment
For advisory councils, there is one face-to-face meeting per year along with a couple conference calls. For Board of Governors member, there are three face-to-face meetings per year along with one conference call in December. For the Nominations Committee, there is one face-to-face meeting per year and one conference call. All travel expenses are reimbursed by the NLN -- this includes airfare/train, personal auto, parking, tolls, meals, taxis, lodging, rental car, and miscellaneous expenses such as luggage tips.

National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission
The NLN bylaws require that elected leaders of NLNAC be nominated and elected by the NLN membership. NLNAC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NLN that has separate and independent authority in matters related to accreditation of nursing education programs. The commission develops accreditation processes and procedures, establishes standards and criteria for the accreditation process, executes fiduciary responsibilities, and renders the final decision about the accreditation status of all levels of nursing education programs.

Commissioners and Nominations Committee members are elected for three-year terms. Commissioners may serve two consecutive terms. According to the NLNAC bylaws, there must be two candidates for each position on the ballot.

Positions to be elected:

  • 3 educators representing all program types. Candidates must be from NLNAC- accredited programs.
  • 1 nurse administrator/representative from nursing service. Candidates must be employed full-time in nursing in a non-educational setting. Candidates may have a faculty appointment as an adjunct or clinical faculty.
  • 1 member of the public may not have any connection to the discipline of nursing or to a nursing education program.
  • 1 member NLNAC Nominations Committee
